Shimoda lies 180kms from Tokyo on the southern tip of the Izu Penisula, but it may as well be a world away. This laid-back historical town has a pace all its own, characterized by the sunset amble of the fisherman, surfers and tourists from the harbor shore to the sushi and sake bars that litter its quiet streets. They rise with the sun to some of the most beautiful beaches on honshu-isolated by steep mountains that the crisp ocean air rebounds off. Deeper with this terrain, a plethora of natural onsen housed in quaint ryokan await to relax the tired muscles and midns of both locals and city dwellers from the morth. Less than 3 hrs by train, Shimoda, where urban neuroticism quickly becomes a distant memory, offers an idyllic weekend retreat from the rat race.
